Gleason Sensei returns to Australia – 2nd to 10th Feb

Bill Gleason Sensei is returning to Australia again this February for what is likely to be his final visit. Gleason Sensei (7th dan) is not only a talented exponent of aikido, he is a dedicated teacher, keen to see others develop. He explains the physical, mental and philosophical components of Aikido in order to develop Aiki in the execution of techniques.

He has a long and dedicated Aikido career, studying as a student of Seigo Yamaguchi Shihan in Japan from 1970-1980. He returned to America and founded Shobu Aikido of Boston (www.shobu.org) under the auspices of Saotome Shihan since 1985. In recent years he has worked with other martial artists to develop “aiki” in his training, and will be sharing his talent and experience with us during this visit.

Gleason Sensei has indicted this is likely to be the last time he will come to Australia so it’s an opportunity not to miss – there will be ample opportunities to train with him over the 10 day visit to Sydney and Canberra, so I encourage you to make the most of these:

West Ryde Dojo’s 9th Anniversary – Thursday 1st November

The end of October this year signifies the 9th anniversary of AKI West Ryde dojo! Those nine years represent the growth of all of us at the dojo – both in our aikido, and more broadly in life. To celebrate we will be having a special evening of training on Thursday the 1st November, followed by a dinner at a new local Japanese restaurant. It should be a joyful evening both on and off the mat.

It is all of us that make up the dojo so we hope you can make it along to this special evening and share the fun, and celebrate the growth of your dojo. We look forward to seeing you there.

Great News!!! Coming up in November is the 3rd Aikido Kenkyukai Australia Friendship Gasshuku – ‘Friendshuku 3’ in Mittagong on November 24 and 25.

‘Friendshuku 3’ again offers the opportunity for a traditional Japanese live-in style Gasshuku, led by senior Sensei from within AKI Australia. We will be accommodated at the Harmony Foundation Centre in Mittagong and this year have arranged for a catered dinner on the Saturday evening at the Harmony Centre allowing more time to relax and enjoy good company and the lovely atmosphere.

Every effort will be made to accommodate folk travelling from afar and those with specific needs. Please let us know ahead of time if you have any specific requirements (i.e. Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegetarian, Allergies etc). We are aiming to provide time for people to socialise and connect with one another on and off the mat. This is part of what the friendship weekend is about. More details are provided below and in the enrolment form attached here:

All participants will be staying together at the Harmony Foundation in Mittagong – 5 minutes’ drive from the town centre and dojo. The Harmony Foundation can only comfortably accommodate 35 to 40 people, however we will make every effort to accommodate latecomers. There are 3 accommodation options available and will be apportioned according to preference and on a “first in best-dressed” basis.

NOTE: As per last year, we have a walking lightly on the earth approach to the weekend – accommodation options are self-catered to minimise costs and will necessitate folk cleaning up after themselves, (as if at home). Last year our hosts were delighted with how we treated our accommodation, and we’re sure this year we will offer the same.

Food:

A light lunch will be provided on the Saturday at the Harmony centre before heading over to the dojo. Dinner this year will be onsite at the Harmony Centre supplied by a local caterer. The dining will begin with canapés and some mingling followed by a main meal and desert. We know some of you have specific dietary needs so please indicate your preferences on the Enrolment Form. ‘Roots of Aikido’ workshop, Newcastle, 18-19 August

AKI Newcastle dojo will be hosting a “Roots of Aikido” workshop on the 18 & 19th August.

The workshop will be a structured, collaborative, process-oriented workshop bringing practitioners together to study the ancient origins of aikido. It will be an opportunity to receive input from teachers with roots in Chinese and Japanese martial arts to help us examine the language we use to communicate why we do what we do in our practice. It is also a forum for each of us to demonstrate, share and obtain feedback on how we synthesise, embody and communicate, in mind, body and spirit, the knowledge and experience we pass on in daily practice.

See below for details of the weekend workshop:

VENUE: PCYC Newcastle –   Cnr Young and Melbourne St, Broadmeadow

Upcoming events

We have a range of exciting Aikido events for you over the coming months…..

Firstly AKI Newcastle dojo will be hosting a Roots of Aikido study group on the 18-19th August in Newcastle. More details on this will follow shortly.

Then Sydney City dojo will be holding its 15th Anniversary Gasshuku with Daiyu Takeda Sensei (6th dan) on the 21-23rd  September.

In October, Suzuki Sensei will return again on the 27-28th, this time to Hobart. If you have time to add to this gasshuku, Tasmania is a wonderful place to holiday for anything from a few days to a few months.

And finally the year will come together with a 3rd AKI Friendshuku in Mittagong on the 24 and 25th November. This is a live-in style gasshuku hosted jointly by West Ryde, Orange, Bowral and Erindale dojos. This years theme, “Many streams, One River”  explores the diversity and similarities of Aikido that exist within our group and within each of us. This should prove to be an enjoyable weekend of training and socialising.

Everyone is welcome at all of these events so get involved. More details will come to hand on all these events so stay tuned!
